YOGA Tuning In or Get More Out Of Your Exercise Program!

I began teaching group fitness back in the 80’s. Remember the high-impact jumping up and down and “No Pain, No Gain” and “Go for the Burn!” Well, that was me! I was super energetic and perky. Then I thought I’d earn a little more money and decided to do the mercenary path of management and administration. On one level it probably kept me from injury; however, it was the most unsatisfying and unhappy part of my life.
I remember clearly when a customer, Haris Lender,  invited me to her yoga class. She had observed me in my manic perfectionist best, working until late in the evening, sometimes to the next morning! Of course it was never enough, sound familiar?

Enter the Room with Confidence

Individual results will vary

Summertime can often mean family gatherings and unique social events bringing people together to celebrate or catch up, such as weddings and college reunions. Along with these special occasions often comes the realization that the years may have crept up a little faster than anticipated.

“Our clients come to us and tell us they have an opportunity to meet up with people they haven’t seen in years, so if we can erase a few years without it being too dramatic or obvious, they’re usually quite happy,” says Dr. Cynthia Elliott of Skinspirations Center for Cosmetic Enhancement in Clearwater.

One such technique that allows them to do this is a cutting-edge skin rejuvenation treatment known as the HydraFacial™. Reportedly popular with many A-list celebrities as part of their own pre-bridal itinerary, this non-laser skin resurfacing treatment is unique in that it combines cleansing, exfoliation, extraction, hydration and antioxidant protection – all in one – in a safe, gentle and convenient treatment suitable for all skin types.

Dental Implants Can Make All the Difference…

Imagine that someone special to you wants to take you out to dinner, but you must turn them down.

Why?

Because you can’t eat the things you enjoyed eating before or you are embarrassed about your teeth.

Whether it’s because your teeth are in bad shape, your dentures (plates) don’t work properly or you simply have missing teeth, your quality of life has slipped. And that delicious meal – along with others that you’ve passed up – is now just a dream.

New Hip Replacement Approach Puts Patients Back in Action Faster

Dr. Andrew Cooper of Morton Plant Hospital in Clearwater

If you ask Dr. Andrew Cooper of Morton Plant Hospital in Clearwater, any hip replacement performed properly on a suitable candidate will be successful. But a newer anterior approach which the orthopedic surgeon and hip and knee replacement specialist offers exclusively through the hospital may get that patient to success a little quicker.

“The hip replacement is probably one of the best procedures that has ever been invented in terms of improving quality of life,” he says. “The most common hip replacement, the standard posterior approach, requires an incision which must disrupt certain muscle tissue to do the hip replacement, and this can sometimes translate into a slower recovery and the potential for dislocation. With the anterior approach, less disruption to the muscles can mean quicker recovery, less pain and a lowered rate of dislocation. The anterior approach is just an improvement on an already very successful procedure.”

The Miracle of Water

As a fitness instructor at Safety Harbor Resort and Spa, I hear every day about injuries, sore muscles, aches and pains, tightness, boredom or plateaus in weight loss and fitness. That’s when I suggest the “miracle” of water exercise. Surprisingly, the response quite often is “I don’t do water.” This is very strange to me because I have found that water exercise can be the greatest fitness program available.

Alternative Energy for the Brain

There are currently 5.4 million Americans suffering from Alzheimer’s disease (AD). 80 per cent of them are cared for by family members. It’s clear that this disease affects a lot of people in a profound way. It’s also clear that AD robs people of their memories, their dignity, and their lives. What’s not so clear is what causes it… and what may cure it.

There is hope on the horizon, however. Not a blazing light, mind you, but what was once a flicker is now a glimmer. And oddly enough, it comes in the form of a coconut. The cold-pressed oil from the coconut, to be exact.

Aaah-Choo! Allergies Begone!

If you’re among the millions of Americans made miserable by the spring pollen assault, take heart. Hmmm. I should rephrase that. If you count yourself among those allergy sufferers content with OTC and pharmaceutical drugs that seek to treat symptoms but do little to address the underlying cause of your suffering and are willing to do what it takes to make your allergies a thing of the past, then I encourage you to read on. And yes, take heart.

Remarkable Breakthrough Cutting-Edge TAVR Cardiac Procedure

For those who undergo traditional open heart valve surgery, recovery can mean a minimum three-month healing process. For 88-year-old Austin Carroll, traditional surgery also posed safety concerns. Following his doctor’s advice, he recently underwent a new cardiac procedure, Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement (TAVR, for short), now available at Morton Plant Hospital.

It is described as a safer surgical alternative for candidates where conventional open aortic valve replacement may not be the best option. It is also a procedure that promises to have Carroll up and about in two to four weeks.

Laugh! It’s Good for you

How you think affects your body. If you fret and worry, blood pressure increases, stress hormones are secreted and muscles constrict. Likewise, if you are happy and relaxed, it follows that positive changes will occur in your biology. Research is showing that this is true. Not only is laughter the best medicine but laughter should be part of any wellness program. In order to stay healthy, laugh.

Norman Cousins is often accredited as the first man to spur interest in the study of how humor affects human physiology. Cousins was diagnosed in 1964 with a painful, life-threatening disease (ankylosing spondylitis) and given only months to live. He reasoned that if negative thoughts and emotions could trigger negative effects on the body, then positive thoughts and emotions could trigger positive effects on the body. He proceeded to watch movies and TV shows that he found funny. Over time, his disease went into remission.

A Hearty Laugh is Aerobic Exercise
Further research into the mind/body connection continued in the late 1960’s with Dr. William Fry. He discovered that laughter causes many of the same physiological responses as a mild workout. Laughing increases heart rate, breathing, muscle activation and blood circulation. Dr. Fry describes a hearty laugh session as aerobic exercise.

According to WebMD.com, mirthful laughing 100 times a day provides the same benefits as 20 minutes of cardio exercise. This may seem like an impossible amount of laughter, but Dr Fry also found that the average kindergartener laughs 300 times a day. Perhaps it’s more challenging to giggle with adult problems, but considering your health, it’s worth the effort. Up your laugh quota; it’s good for your heart and lungs.

If laughter is aerobic exercise, is it also a calorie burner? Researchers at Vanderbilt University decided to find out. It turns out that laughing increases calorie expenditure by about 20 percent. If you laugh for 10 to 15 minutes straight, the calorie burn increases by approximately 50 percent. At this rate, if you laughed daily, you could lose about 4 pounds in a year. Not too exciting. Perhaps for weight loss it is better to exercise and laugh while you’re doing it.

Laughter Boosts the Immune System
While laughter may not be a massive calorie burning form of exercise, it does reduce negative hormones (cortisol and adrenaline) that have been linked with fat accumulation, especially in the abdomen. Dr. Lee Burk of Loma Linda University showed that laughter not only reduces negative hormones but also boosts the immune system.

Apparently a hearty guffaw triggers antibodies and other disease fighting cells to “kick it up a notch.” Cancer and some other types of tumors were reduced, according to Dr. Berk’s studies. Unserious behavior has serious benefits including less chance of illness and reduced fat accumulation.

Expect Good Things to Happen
If the thought of all this chuckling has you exhausted, there is an easier option. All you need to do is look forward to having a good time. Just the anticipation of positive events decreases stress hormones and improves the immune system. This is referred to as the “biology of hope.” This reaction is seen in terminally ill patients, who often hang on to life when a holiday or special occasion is imminent. For the healthy, this points to the value of setting goals and having future plans that are affirmative. Expecting good things to happen is good for your health.

Erma Bombeck once said, “if you can’t make it better, you can laugh at it.” It turns out that you can make it better by laughing at it!

BAD TO THE BONE Osteoporosis and Exercise

A frail, severely slumped elderly woman who coughs and fractures a rib or pushes a door and breaks a wrist, is the image of osteoporosis. Circle of Independence • A Positive Alternative to Assisted Living

When Jan Stammer’s father in-law’s health began to decline, she became his main caregiver. “Joe and I would hold hands in the van over the Bayside Bridge to V.A. appointments, singing to the oldies,” she said. Joe accepted that death was coming and spoke freely about reoccurring dreams he’d had of his wife. “We became very close and I was able to help him.” That time before her father in-law passed was bittersweet, but Jan wouldn’t trade it for anything.
