Summer Camp FUN at Area Parks

Photo Courtesy of the City Safety Harbor

Summer Camp programs are offered by most of the Park Districts in area communities. All of them offer advance registration for their own community’s residents but accept youngsters from nearby communities when space is available. The new reciprocity agreement that involves Safety Harbor, Oldsmar, Dunedin and Tarpon Springs applies to many of the specialized park programs, but it does not apply to the Summer Camps. A similar agreement between Largo and Pinellas Park does apply to Summer Camps, according to a Parks representative.

Somewhere Over The Rainbow The perfect time for a kayak trip

Here on the Rainbow River, it’s a cool crisp winter day and about as peaceful as it can get. Compared to summer, when tubers and kayakers fill the river like a freeway most weekends, winter offers paddlers an exquisite experience combining relaxation and nature.

Just two hours north of Clearwater in the sleepy town of Dunnellon, the Rainbow River has long been a favorite of Central Florida paddlers. Its crystal clear, spring fed waters flow for 5.7 miles and are ideal for kayaking. The source of the river, Rainbow Springs, is located at the headwater in Rainbow Springs State Park. This first magnitude spring has an outflow of about 400-600 million gallons of cool 72 degree water daily year-round.

Mardi Gras in Dunedin

Dunedin recognizes Mardi Gras in a big way! In fact, it is now one of the three largest Mardi Gras festivals in the country. Fat Tuesday celebrations started way back in 1990 when Gregory Brady and a few other downtown merchants sat in Club 325 – which is now Blur – reminiscing about celebrations they had attended in the past.

Since none of the merchants could justify leaving their businesses, they organized a very small Mardi Gras of their own. Thus began Dunedin’s first Mardi Gras, albeit unofficial. The following year the celebration brought a hundred more people than expected.
