Letter from the Publisher: Happy Birthday To Us

Publisher-1It’s hard to believe that another year has passed since we began Destination Publications.  Now we serve the entire Pinellas County area from Old Tampa Bay to the Gulf of Mexico and from Tarpon Springs to St. Petersburg and beyond. We have continued with our expansion while now serving new readers in Pasco and Hillsborough County.

Opportunities continue to grow as we salute the many destinations that make this area so wonderful. All of this wouldn’t be possible without the support of our advertisers and of our loyal readers. We thank you all!

This issue adds a new dimension to our coverage with the “Best Nautical Destinations” section. One thing that makes our area particularly unique is its extensive shore line. Residents and visitors alike enjoy our award-winning beaches and the great nautical opportunities that this location has to offer—swimming, fishing, boating and even dinner cruises and marine expeditions as well as the popular Clearwater Marine Aquarium.

Salute to the Arts Issue
This Winter Issue marks our annual “Salute to the Arts.” Never have the arts been more prominent in the Tampa Bay community than they are today. The performing arts are alive and well at the area’s three major venues—Ruth Eckerd Hall, The Mahaffey Theater and the Straz Performing Arts Center—but many other theatres add to the opportunities for enjoyment. (See the article on pages 14-17)

And the upcoming visits by two well-known artists to Syd Entel Galleries in Safety Harbor add to the excitement. Actress-Artist Jane Seymour will display her works there on January 12 and 13, while Peter Max will return with some entirely new works on March 2 and 3. St. Petersburg’s Art Walk showcases some work by artists in that community. We are deeply honored to offer to our loyal readership a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to be eligible to own a magnificent Giclee created by the Actress and Artist Jane Seymour. Please visit our website at www.DestinationTampaBay.com for details about this unique offer. (See page 6 for more about Jane Seymour and visit our website to read about Peter Max’s successful career in our Winter 2012 issue and see some of his new work on page 9 of this issue.

3 Years & Still Giving Back
This issue of Destination Tampa Bay marks the end of three complete years of publishing our magazine. While we haven’t accomplished all our goals—yet—we can honestly say that we have lived up to our promise to be a “Publication with a Purpose.”
Our media kit reminds potential advertisers that the mission of Destination magazine is to promote local businesses to residents and visitors and to highlight their quality of life and civic pride. The magazine will strive to improve the economic development of the community and to reinforce the core values and traditions inherent to the communities we serve.

Welcome Summer Visitors
We have a unique opportunity coming our way this summer. Some 50,000 people from all over the United States and even from around the world will be visiting Tampa Bay to participate in the Republican National Convention. Whether we’re Democrats or Republicans, we can use this event to let the world know what a great Destination Tampa Bay is.

Last February, the city of Indianapolis got rave reviews from football fans who attended the Super Bowl there. Just think how much greater we can help make the experience of our visitors be with a truly warm Tampa Bay welcome.

Destination Readers Are Important To Us

As we have grown over the past two years from a small town publication with just 15,000 copies to an area-wide magazine with 45,000 issues published, we have heard many favorable comments from our readers. They like the up-beat look of the magazine and enjoy reading its stories. Many have told us that they had no idea how much the area in which they live has to offer. Our expanded “Around the Towns” section tells of activities and events that readers look forward to and even mark on their calendars. And visitors to our area find these activities interesting as well. We attend many of these events to give out our magazine and to meet our readers. Your response is very gratifying.

Destination Salutes The Arts

Photo taken at Holidazzle by Marcia Biggs

With an ongoing purpose of shining a bright light “On the Sunrise Side of Tampa Bay®,“ this issue of Destination Tampa Bay pays special attention to the arts with our “Salute to the Arts.” Over the past two years since our publication began, we have devoted considerable space to the arts in our communities, and to the creative people who live here.

Articles devoted to world class artists like Peter Max and Dale Chihuly in this issue pay homage to the area’s growing interest in art; however, we also feature the talented local artists who live and work here. The Second Saturday Gallery Walk in St. Petersburg and a growing arts community in Dunedin are just a sampling of what happens here. In past issues, we have featured several outstanding area artists, and we salute the efforts of Todd Ramquist and Kiaralinda to raise funds to build the Safety Harbor Art and Music Center (SHAM-c). Their Holidazzle display was spectacular! We don’t want to forget the importance of the Performing Arts as well. Area theatres are outstanding. Clear Jazz follows the Clearwater Jazz Festival in bringing outstanding musical talent here, but it has the added goal of helping to fund music education for area youth.

Des-ti-na-tion (des-te-na-shun)
A place worthy of travel or an extended visit.

If you’ve been reading this magazine for any time at all, you can see that it really lives up to its name. It lets readers know about the places, people and events that make this area such a great “destination.” Whether you are traveling here for a short vacation, coming for an extended visit (a “snow bird”?) or one of the many people who call our area their home, you know what a great Destination “The Sunrise Side of Tampa Bay®” is. Our trademarked slogan simply reminds people that we plan to include all of the Pinellas County Communities that lie west of Old Tampa Bay. And today our coverage extends all the way to the Gulf of Mexico where people can enjoy some spectacular sunsets!

On The Sunrise Side of Tampa Bay
When you look at this magazine’s cover, you may not realize that we have a slogan that has been with us since our earliest beginnings. “On the Sunrise Side of Tampa Bay®” refers not only to the geographic location of the area we serve, but it also affirms our goal of looking toward a bright day for our area and its residents. And to let outsiders in on our area’s not-so-well-kept little secret, we live in one of the greatest places in the Tampa-St. Petersburg Metroplex—and, we think, in the entire state of Florida.
