Honda Grand Prix of St. Petersburg Kicks Off IZOD Indy Car Series

Fast cars, racing legends and cheering fans are all signature elements of the IZOD IndyCar Series, and it will begin at the famous Honda Grand Prix racing track in Downtown St. Petersburg for the third year in a row. The long weekend of racing-related festivities begins on Friday, March 22 and ends on Sunday, March 24.

The festivities include an IndyCar Fan Village, a parade and fireworks show, an autograph session with the drivers, interactive exhibits and games, live music, and a giant ferris wheel. More racing events will be presented, such as the Firestone Indy Lights Series, the Star Mazda Championship, the USF2000 National Championship, and the World Challenges.

The Honda Grand Prix track is a unique mixture of streets in St. Petersburg and a section of runway at the Albert Whitted Airport. Grandstand and general admission tickets are available for purchase for single day or all three days. Tickets can be viewed and purchased on the Honda Grand Prix website at www.gpstpete.com.

Festival of States Illuminated Night Parade Begins Famed Racing Weekend

Before you enjoy the sights and sounds of this year’s IZOD IndyCar Series at Honda Grand Prix, be sure to catch the annual Illuminated Night Parade on Thursday, March 21, at 7:30 p.m. The Parade, which is sponsored by BB&T and Progress Energy, has been lighting up the streets of St. Petersburg every year since 1969.

Numerous floats with associations, dance troupes, and marching bands will cruise around downtown. In addition, the drivers in the IndyCar Series will make appearances in their show cars.

The parade starts at Central Avenue and 5th Street, then travels east on Central Avenue. The floats will then head north on 2nd Street, then east on 1st Ave North, then finally north on Beach Drive to 5th Avenue North. Parking is available at the Baywalk Garage and the South Core Garage on 1st Avenue South.
