Golf fans will have a chance to see some of their favorite professional golfers in action when the 2018 Valspar Championship returns to Innisbrook Golf Resort in Palm Harbor March 5-11.
Two of the biggest names in professional golf, Tiger Woods and Jordan Spieth, are among the players who have committed to participate in the championship, part of what pro golfers refer to as the “Florida swing.” The Valspar Championship is one of a series of events played in the Sunshine State leading up to the PGA’s Masters Tournament April 5-8 in August, Georgia.
“This is tremendous news,” said tournament director Tracy West of the commitment from Woods and Spieth. “Obviously, we have never had a field as strong as we now have.”
West said the tournament organizers are preparing for a huge crowd of spectators during next week’s championship.
“We expect tremendous demand for tickets and parking, and have put plans in place to deal with it,” West said. “Still, we ask for understanding from our patrons in the days ahead and anticipate we will have to declare sellouts on some of the days of the tournament.”
The tournament is unable to sell tickets through the Tournament Office. They are only at Publix stores and the Valspar Championship website while supplies last. ValsparChampionship.com
The championship will be played on Innisbrook’s signature Copperhead Course. Known for its “Snake Pit,” (holes 16, 17 and 18), the Copperhead was designed by famed course architect Larry Packard and completely restored in 2015.
The Par 71, 7,200-yard course is known for its rolling terrain, pine tree-lined fairways and resident fox squirrels, blue heron and gators.
It’s a course that Woods has played before.
Although he is playing the Valspar Championship for the first time, Woods, the winner of 14 Major Championships, competed on the Copperhead in the 1996 JCPenney Classic, finishing 2nd with partner Kelli Kuehne.
Spieth won the 2015 Valspar Championship along with 11 other PGA Tour events including three Major Championships. The 24-year-old Texan currently ranks fourth in the Official World Golf Ranking.
Innisbrook is located at 36750 U.S. 19 N. in Palm Harbor. For information, call (727) 942-5566.
