Tampa Bay Snow Skiers Plan – PREVIEW PARTY

Tampa Bay Snow Skiers & Boarders will be hosting their annual PREVIEW PARTY on Friday, Aug. 19, at the Hilton Carillon Hotel, 950 Lake Carillon Drive, St Petersburg in the Feather Sound Area. The fun begins when the doors open at 6:30 sharp. Admission is free and a delicious buffet will be provided.

Come on out and socialize as you make your way around the room meeting and greeting your TBSSB trip leaders. They will provide you with detailed information about our 19 exciting 2016/2017 ski trips throughout the United States as well as Canada, Japan and Chile. Not to be missed are two European Bike and Barge trips to Croatia in May, 2017. Gulfport Celebrates the Gecko

geckos-under-the-seaCostumes are highly encouraged at the whimsical “20,000 Geckos Under the Sea” party inside the Gulfport Casino Ballroom on Saturday, Aug. 27, from 6 to 11 p.m. The 8th annual Gecko Ball will feature music, dancing, food and drink, a costume contest, a bevy of silent auction items, the popular live auction of artist-created geckos, and much more. Celebration of the Gecko will go on all month in Gulfport. The Gecko Art Show will be August 5, Gulfport’s annual Gecko Crawl is set for Saturday, Aug. 13, from 4 to 9 p.m. with a big after party and Poker Run. The Gecko finale will be the Gecko Fest on Labor Day weekend.

Rowdies Soccer Opens Home Season with Jacksonville

St. Pete’s own professional soccer team will play three home games at Al Lang Field in St. Petersburg this month. They will play the Ft. Lauderdale Strikers on Saturday, Aug. 6; FC Edmonton on Saturday, Aug. 20, and Rayo OKC (Oklahoma City) on Saturday, Aug. 27. Game time for all the games will be 7:30 p.m. Eleven matches are scheduled to be played in St. Pete this fall.

The Rowdies recently added a new player to reinforce its attack when it signed Colombian forward Carlos Preciado. Joe Cole had the NASL play of the week when he scored a bicycle goal against Puerto Rico in a 3-0 win in the team’s home opener. Al Lang Stadium is located at 200 1st Ave. S in St. Petersburg. Wearable Art 12 at Dunedin Fine Art Center

wearable- art-ballon“Wearable ART” will continue its tradition of showcasing the work of artists working in fashion-related ways on Saturday, Aug. 27, with its 12th annual event at the Dunedin Fine Art Center. This year’s show will feature runway presentations by Mark Byrne, Stefania Costanzo, Melissa Dolce, Neva the Diva Durham, the Garden Fairies, Julian Hartzog, Johnny Hunt, Dacota Maphis/Sue Woodall-Metas, Nancy Niss andLina Teixeira. All of this is crowned by the incredible hair and make-up artistry of Salon GW and La Posh.

Emceeing this year’s soiree will be none other than Paul Wilborn and the incomparable Eugenie Bondurant (most recently – Tigris from The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2). 3rd Friday Music Series Features ‘The Outpatients’

indie-pop-indie-rockCome out to Main Street in Safety Harbor on Friday, August 19, for this month’s Third Friday event. The city closes its Main Street to vehicular traffic from 6th Ave. to Bayshore every 3rd Friday night of the month for shopping, dining, and live entertainment for the whole family. Main Street will be closed to traffic from 6 to 10 pm. so that you can enjoy all that it has to offer.

The August Third Friday Entertainment will feature The Outpatients, a Clearwater group that is known for its Indie/Pop Rock music. The group recently released a music video entitled, “Hold On.” Proceeds from this month’s event will go to the Mattie Williams Neighborhood Family Center in Safety Harbor.

Slightly Stoopid at Vinoy for Concert in the Park August 14

The popular group has recently completed a tour of the East Coast and now is in Florida for a limited series of concerts. Syd Entel Galleries Hosts ‘Special Art by Special Hands’

Tampa Bay Lobster Fest at Kapok Center

Oldsmar Centennial Seeks Time Capsule Treasures

timecapusle_contentsIf you could preserve a special photo, letter, or other treasured item in a time capsule, what would you choose? To celebrate the City of Oldsmar Centennial, the Oldsmar People’s Centennial Task Force invites you to help capture a snapshot of life in Oldsmar in the year 2016. The time capsule will not be opened until 2066. You can submit one item (picture, letter, etc.) free of charge. Additional items can be added for an additional donation of $5.00 for each item each. All proceeds benefit the Oldsmar Historical Society.

If you really want to leave your mark on the future, choose an interesting possession to inter that will fascinate the future. Participants will receive a VIP ticket to the Time Capsule Sealing Ceremony in September and an Official Time Keeper Certificate.

Fashion Meets Surrealism in Dali’s Horst Exhibit

horst-art-photoSt. Petersburg’s Dali Museum is currently exhibiting a fascinating display of the work of famous photographer Horst P. Horst 1906-1999). It combines high fashion and surrealism. Horst ranks among the top three photographers of the last century. In his 60-year career, Horst had his work on the pages of Vogue and House and Garden, and he was renowned as a master of expressive lighting and atmospheric illusion.

The exhibit will continue through September 6. It features 180 works: original vintage photographs, sketches, films, letters, cameras and large scale color prints made for the exhibition in collaboration with the Condé Nast Archive in New York. The Dali is located at 1 Dali Blvd. in St. Pete.


Exhibitors Invited for John’s Pass Seafood Festival

seafood-feast-festExhibitor applications are now being accepted for the event to provide the various booths at the-is year’s John’s Pass Seafood Festival , which will include a large variety of seafood, arts & crafts, a Halloween block party, seafood competitions for professionals and a new high school and middle school cooking event, a fishing tournament, live music, costume contests and more. Those who register before August 30 will receive a $50 discount on fees.

The John’s Pass Seafood Festival will be bigger and better than ever this year, as it will grow from three days to four days to provide more time for visitors to enjoy the food and the fun. The festival will take place from Thursday, Oct. 27, until Sunday, Oct. 30, at the famous fishing community, John’s Pass in Village and Boardwalk in Madeira Beach.

Rays Watch Party at Guy Harvey Outpost on August 14

‘From the Heart: Folk Art on Paper’ Opens at MFA

folk-art-paperThe “From the Heart: Folk Art on Paper” exhibit at the Museum of Fine Arts at 255 Beach Drive in downtown St. Pete invites visitors into realms never to be forgotten. It opens Saturday, Aug. 6 and will run through November 13. In a Gallery Talk on at 3 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 7, MFA’s Curator of Contemporary Art Katherine Pill brings a fresh perspective to a genre which is now recognized as a compelling contribution to American art and culture.

See folk art from gifted artists including Bill Traylor, Thornton Dial, Nellie Mae Rowe, Lonnie Holley, Juanita Rogers, Purvis Young and Dilmus Hall that would look completely at home alongside those by masters with formal training. However, because many of these self-taught artists live in rural settings, both real and imaginary animals often appear, along with explorations of religion and spirituality.


The Great Brain Wash 5k on August 6

kids-fun-slideIf running a 5k in the Florida summer heat doesn’t sound appealing, think again. The Great Brain Wash 5k has a different twist. It features a dozen giant waterslides and other obstacles disbursed throughout the race, so you can walk, run and play! This 5K travels through downtown St. Pete on Saturday, Aug. 6, from North Straub Park, 350 Bay Shore Drive NE with waves starting at 8 a.m.

Registration includes entry to the race, breakfast, t-shirt (if available), finishing medal, plus post-race lunch party in North Straub Park with beer, Florida cane vodka and non-alcoholic drinks. Brew Bus Beach Day Is a Traveling Party

St. Pete Beach 5K on August 19

run-5k-streetRunners and walkers are invited to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the St. Pete Road Runners club with an evening 5K run along beautiful St. Pete Beach on Friday, Aug. 19. This is race #3 of the three-race series. Race in the largest beach race in the area, on beautiful St. Pete Beach; winner of the #1 U.S. beach destination. Races start at 7 p.m. and are entirely run on the beach, in the sand, for a fun chip-timed 5K run. New this year will be a Kids Run at 6:30 p.m. before the 5K race. All kids’ run participants will receive a race bib and a finisher medal!

Westchase Artists Society Celebrates 10th Anniversary

Art-colors-canvas-brushThe Westchase Artists Society will celebrate their 10-year anniversary with a group show at the Art Gallery at the Upper Tampa Bay Regional Library from August 1 through September 30. The “10th Anniversary Group Show” will feature the work of 17 artists using many different mediums, including oil, acrylic, watercolor, sculpture and photography. The Library is located at 11211 Countryway Boulevard in Tampa.

The artists will be hosting a Meet the Artists Reception and Anniversary Party on Saturday, August 6 from 3:30 until 5:30 p.m. The reception is free and open to the public.
