‘Cinema on the Sand’ brings more movies to St Petersburg. Bring your chairs, blankets and your floats and come to Upham Beach for a special Friday night watching a movie under the stars! The best part…the movie is being played from a boat so you can relax and float during the movie! On Friday, July 12, ‘Cinema on the Sand’ will present The Meg. This movie is a 2018 science fiction action film directed by Jon Turteltaub with a screenplay by Dean Georgaris, Jon Hoeber, and Erich Hoeber, loosely based on the 1997 book Meg: A Novel of Deep Terror by Steve Alten. The film stars Jason Statham, Li Bingbing, Rainn Wilson, Ruby Rose, Winston Chao, and Cliff Curtis. The film follows a group of scientists who encounter a 75-foot-long megalodon shark while on a rescue mission at the floor of the Pacific Ocean. A Chinese-American co-production, The Meg was released in both countries on August 10, 2018, in RealD 3D. It grossed over $530 million worldwide and received mixed reviews from critics,
On Friday, July 26, you can see Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, the series’ next movie. This 2018 American computer-animated superhero film based on the Marvel Comics character, Miles Morales/ Spider-Man, produced by Columbia Pictures and Sony Pictures Animation in association with Marvel, and distributed by Sony Pictures Releasing. It is the first animated feature film in the Spider-Man franchise, and is set in a shared multiverse called the “Spider-Verse”, which has alternate universes.
The film was directed by Bob Persichetti, Peter Ramsey, and Rodney Rothman from a screenplay by Phil Lord and Rothman and a story by Lord, and stars the voices of Shameik Moore, Jake Johnson, Hailee Steinfeld, Mahershala Ali, Brian Tyree Henry, Lily Tomlin, Luna Lauren Velez, John Mulaney, Kimiko Glenn, Nicolas Cage, and Liev Schreiber. In the film, Miles Morales becomes one of the many Spider-Men from various dimensions who team up to save New York City from Kingpin.
Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse was released on December 14, 2018. It grossed over $375 million worldwide against a $90 million budget and received praise for its animation, characters, story, voice acting, humor and soundtrack, and won numerous awards, including Best Animated Feature at the 91st Academy Awards, 46th Annie Awards, and 76th Golden Globe Awards. It was the first non-Disney or Pixar film to win the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature since Rango (2011). A sequel and spin-off are currently in development.
“Cinema on the Sand” has two more free movies scheduled for August. On Friday, Aug. 9, you can watch Smokey & the Bandit. There will be a vote on Facebook to determine the “People’s Choice” movie that will be presented on Friday, Aug 23.
