Heller’s Stories of Women and African Americans in World War I

Heller’s Stories of Women and African Americans in World War I presents an in-depth discussion about the noteworthy contributions of women and African Americans to the war effort. With a focus on St. Petersburg and Florida, Heller will delve into the underlying connections between the underrepresentation and lack of recognition of these marginalized groups and their wartime sacrifice, and the Civil Rights Movement of the 1950s and 1960s. This historical event will be held at the St Petersburg Museum of History.

About the Speaker:

Ron Heller, a 20 year veteran History Teacher at Shorecrest, holds a Bachelor’s from New York University and a Masters from Harvard University – both in History. He has been involved in the annual Florida History Fair and was a recipient of the Secretary of State’s Teacher of Merit Award (2009). In 2016, he was selected as a National Endowment for the Humanities Summer Scholar from a national applicant pool to attend one of 26 seminars and institutes supported by the NEH. The Endowment is a federal agency that supports these enrichment opportunities each summer at colleges, universities, and cultural institutions so that teachers can study with experts in humanities disciplines. Following several NEH and World War I Centennial Commission seminars on the legacies of WWI, Heller began in earnest to examine the role of women and African American soldiers and the soldiers’ experience during World War I.
