Gecko Art Show

Displays Local Artists Work, Kicks Off Gecko Events

This event in Destination Tampa Bay has already taken place. Here is the information about the event in 2019. Make sure to check back for our featured events for details on next year’s event. A Gecko Art Show and Reception on Friday, Aug. 2, will kick off a month-long series of events in Gulfport leading up to the 18th annual GeckoFest on August 31. The Art Show and Reception will display Geckos created by local artists. These larger-than-life geckos will be the centerpiece of the live charity auction at the 11th Annual Gecko Ball on Saturday, Aug. 24. The charming geckos will be on display at the fifth annual Art Gecko Show during an opening reception on Friday, Aug. 2, at the Catherine Hickman Theater from 6 to 8 p.m. The Catherine Hickman Theater is located at 5501 27th Avenue South in Gulfport.

The Gecko Art Show will also feature selections from the participating artists’ regular body of work in a variety of media. The reception is free and open to the public and will also include complimentary hors d’oeuvre and a cash bar.

The selection of artists’ other work will continue to be displayed through the month of August, but following the reception, the geckos themselves will be moved to preview locations in venues throughout Gulfport’s Waterfront Village before they go up for auction at the Gulfport Casino Ballroom during the Gecko Ball.  Each gecko will be a prized collector’s work of art and join the ranks of nearly 80 other geckos that have been created since the inception of the Gecko Ball.

Organizers initiated the Artists’ Gecko Auction ten years ago with much success, and the auction is now a popular part of the tradition of annual Gulfport Gecko-related activities in late summer. The Art Gecko Show was conceived in 2015 to highlight and show appreciation for the participating artists. A portion of the proceeds from the various Gecko activities in Gulfport will go to support local charities.
