More from Janna Kennedy:

Janna Kennedy began designing costumes as a high school student for various dance productions and events. She won Best in Show for “The Mad Hatter” at her junior college and designed as a theater major at Florida State University for Studio Theatre. Passionate about immersing herself into the period or genre within which each design lives, she pore over countless reference materials, both online and in my personal library—floor-to-ceiling shelves of dusty art, design, and period clothing books.
In the mid-90s Janna Kennedy began designing costumes for me and my friends to enter New York City’s Coney Island Mermaid Parade. At the same time, she started Halloween 313, which began life as a yearly, Halloween night spook fest on my front lawn in Brooklyn. Over the course of 23 years, Halloween 313 evolved into a full-blown theatrical show, with script, actors, sets, lights…and, of course, costumes. In many ways, Halloween 313 was a dream come true: it combined her love of all things Halloween with her love of smart, funny, often satirical, but always detailed costumes.
