Paddlers Compete in 43rd Annual Crisp Park Race
The Florida Competition Paddlers Association will host the 43rd Annual Crisp Park Race starting at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 16. This free race has long and short course options and is open to all paddle craft. On-site registration is between 8 and 9 a.m. Participants are encouraged to preregister via PaddleGuru or the FCPA Facebook page to help organizers anticipate the number of participants. The FCPA was formed in 1976 to coordinate and promote the sport of canoe and kayak racing in Florida and hosts approximately 14 free recreational races across the state of Florida each year. To be eligible for the annual points championship, you must be an FCPA member which costs $10 annually.
Racing takes place in a variety of categories—prone paddle with your hands, paddle while standing (paddleboard) paddle while sitting with a two-blade paddle in a kayak or with a single-blade paddle in a canoe, and an outrigger or highkneel canoe-unlimited canoe. Long course paddlers will compete on an “out and back” course for a total distance of approximately 12 miles. The short course is also “out and back” for a total distance of approximately 6 miles. Don’t forget your lawn chairs and a dish to share for the post-race potluck picnic.
