Secrets of the Sea and the Marine Discovery Center Adds Events Before Construction

Secrets of the Sea and the Marine Discovery Center adds events before construction.  Below are just a few of the upcoming events and opportunities that will prepare the way for programming:

Plastic is forever…do your part make your choices smart.

On Friday February 24th Bauder Elementary School hosted their annual Science Expo.  The Marine Discovery Center showcased our marine Debris activity to over 900 participants.  During the 2-hour span we taught about the importance of reducing, reusing and recycling as well as showing children and their parents how long items take to biodegrade once they enter the ocean.  Plastic unfortunately is forever.  Special thanks to Bauder Elementary School for letting us take part in this great expo.

Teen Science Café:  Oil Spill Monitoring in the Gulf of Mexico

Thursday March 2nd we partnered with Admiral Farragut Academy and Sea Turtle Trackers to host a FL Teen Science Café.  Jim Jeansonne, a retired NOAA Scientific Support Specialist educated over 40 high school students on what goes on during an oil spill response.  He worked extensively on the BP Deepwater Horizon oil spill and explained that after the initial work the response continues in the form of monitoring, shoreline assessments and cleanup, decontamination of the vessels and equipment used, and the continued search for and monitoring of any residual hydrocarbons deep in the Gulf or at distance from the source.

Special thanks to Jim Jeansonne, Admiral Farragut Academy, and Sea Turtle Trackers for their contributions to this café.
