Diversely talented artists from Florida and around the world will bring fresh creative visions to the streets of St. Pete for the second annual SHINE St. Petersburg Mural Festival, coming Sept. 1 through 10, 2016. New murals by 16 international, national, and local artists will further enrich the city’s public outdoor gallery, adding new styles—from colorful geometric patterns to delicately-rendered realism—all expertly painted on large walls and even on street intersections.
The festival’s confirmed roster includes artists Pixel Pancho (Italy), Caratoes (Hong Kong), Cecilia Lueza (St. Petersburg, FL), Zulu Painter (St. Petersburg, FL), and a dozen others. In addition, the St. Petersburg-based Ink Werks Crew was selected from more than 30 entries to create this year’s SHINE Open Call Wall. SHINE illuminates the power of art in accessible spaces by revitalizing areas, inspiring dialogue, and uniting the St. Pete community. A non-profit public art project built in partnership between local artists and community members, the festival brought 17 new murals to downtown St. Petersburg last year.
The 2016 festival kicks off Thursday, September 1, from 6 p.m. to 11 p.m. with Creative Block, the official SHINE opening block party where renowned local artist Cecilia Lueza will lead a team of volunteers to transform the intersection at Central Avenue and 5th Street into a vibrant street-level mural. Carmada art cars will line the streets as DJ Mega spins in the Red Bull MXT mobile sound station, and a pop-up exhibition at Florida CraftArt will feature 15 Red Bull coolers converted into unique works of art by prominent and emerging Bay area talents.
SHINE continues to innovate and inspire in 2016, cultivating new standards of artistic excellence and reflecting the intensely creative spirit of our City of the Arts.
