The Mainstage Performance Season Presents IL TROVATORE
St. Petersburg Opera’s second decade begins with Il Trovatore, Giuseppe Verdi’s turbulent tragedy of four characters caught in a web of family ties, politics and love, seasoned with revenge and death. The characters are impelled by raw emotion and the music is as uninhibited as the emotions. The story of the troubadour of the title, his vengeance obsessed gypsy mother, his devoted lover, and her evil aristocratic pursuer is pure soap opera.
Starring as Leonora, the object of two men’s desire, is Alexandra Batsios, who sang Konstanze in SPO’s 2016 production of The Abduction from the Seraglio. Her would-be lovers, Manrico and Count di Luna, will be sung by Michael Morrow (Don Jose in 2015’s Carmen) and Christopher Clayton. The crazy gypsy Azucena is sung by Claudia Chapa.
