Take a Trip Down Memory Lane for the Holidays

Did you know the Barbie doll’s full name is Barbara Millicent Roberts? And that she debuted on March 9, 1959, and cost just $3?

The iconic Barbie is just one of the nostalgic items on display in the “Florida Girls & Boys & Their Toys” exhibit at Sulphur Springs Museum and Heritage Center. The exhibit is on display now through January 5th.

Along with Barbie and some of her wardrobe and accessories, the exhibit includes an impressive collection of vintage Happy Meal toys over the years, from the McDonald’s Hamburglar to Disney movie characters. Gamers will enjoy exploring the history of video game consoles and the origins of handheld gaming.

Family Board Game Day

In celebration of the vintage toys exhibit, the museum is also hosting its first Family Board Game Day. Kids and adults alike will enjoy testing their skill and luck at classic board games like Trouble and Connect Four. Winners will take home prizes. When: Saturday, December 17, from 1 to 3 p.m. Admission is free.

What in the World? How Walt Created Disney World!

“What in the World? How Walt Created Disney World”: Bestselling author and former stand-up comedian and improv actor will amaze audiences with his presentation on the making of Disney World, which involved “not only subterfuge, but also monumental innovations and engineering feats.” Part of the Sunday Speaker series, this event is free and open to the public. When: Sunday, December 4 at 2 p.m. Refreshments will be served.

Music Under the Stars: Enjoy an evening of live music under the stars at Mann-Wagnon Park. When: Sunday, December 11th. Entertainment and time to be announced; watch the website for details.

Permanent and Virtual Exhibits:

Sulphur Spring Museum

Sulphur Springs Museum and Heritage Center welcomes you to enjoy its permanent exhibits year round, which include a five-panel history of Sulphur Springs and some of its best-known landmarks; a four-panel exhibit telling the story of Mann-Wagnon Park and the Natural History Museum that moved to the Museum of Science and Industry in the 1970s; and a three-panel history of Sulphur Springs during the segregation era.

SulfurSprings Museum

Founded in 2006, Sulphur Springs Museum and Heritage Center partnered with University of South Florida’s Department of Anthropology students and faculty to help conduct research, obtain oral histories of local residents, and provide other resources to support the museum’s vision. The new facility at Mann-Wagnon Memorial Park was opened in 2017. In addition to celebrating the rich, diverse history of Sulphur Springs, the museum strives to provide educational resources and opportunities for the community, contribute to the community’s economic growth, and promote respect and preservation of the area’s natural features.
