The Tampa Bay Symphony (TBS), under Music Director and Conductor Mark Sforzini, will present the 6th Annual International Composition Competition Finals on Sunday, February 26, at 2:00 p.m. at the Palladium, 253 Fifth Ave. N in St. Petersburg.
This year’s competition had two requirements for the composers: the piece had to be written in 2022, and the composition should tie into one of the themes of Ukraine, War and/or Freedom. There were 49 entries received from the following 17 countries: US(22), China(2), Singapore(1), Peru(2), Turkey(1), UK(4), The Netherlands(1), Australia(2), Canada(5), Ukraine(2), Indonesia(1), Taiwan(1), Iran(1), Norway(1), South Korea(1), Israel(1), and Russia(1). From the original 49 entries, three finalist pieces have been chosen, and will be featured at the event on February 26 at the Palladium.
The pieces are Incandescence (Ukraine’s Undying Light) by Brandon Walker, US, Through Shattering Snow and Fallen Glass by Jeffrey Fong, Canada, and Defiant Overture by Austin Ali, US. An Honorable Mention has been awarded to a fourth piece, “Final” of the Ukrainian Symphony, by Vyacheslav Tkach, Ukraine.
This event is really special because not only does it give composers from around the world a platform from which their works can be heard, it treats our audience to a rare glimpse of our Music Director, Mark Sforzini, rehearsing the orchestra in an informal setting”, says Susan Rhein, Tampa Bay Symphony Board President.
After each piece is rehearsed onstage for about 20 minutes, the orchestra will run it straight through, and then move on to the next piece, after which the TBS musicians will vote for the winner. At that time a vote will also be taken among the audience members and there will be an Audience Choice Winner. The event is FREE and open to the public. Tickets can be obtained in advance online but is not necessary to get in. For additional information, please visit the website: www.TampaBaySymphony.org. Tampa Bay Symphony (727) 827-8087 P.O.
